US Grants Temporary Protected Status To Ukrainians To Halt Deportation

New Delhi: In the wake of ongoing war in Ukraine and to protect Ukrainian citizens in the United States from deportation, especially during the war time, the United States government has decided to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The TPS will be provided for the next 18 months.

''The 'temporary protected status' of Ukrainian citizens will be extended for 18 months due to the ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions in the country,'' the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas posted a video, wherein, he condemned Russia's activities. He further said that Russia's premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians are being forced to seek refuge in other countries.

"In these extraordinary times, we will continue to offer our support and protection to Ukrainian nationals in the United States", he added.

What is Temporary Protected Status?

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is granted by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (Secretary) to eligible foreign-born individuals who are unable to return home safely due to conditions or circumstances preventing their country from adequately handling the return.
